Strategies for uncovering student understanding
Questioning by teachers
1. Random Talk Partners
- better behaviour, new friends, mutual respect, more confidence, learning from others, wont miss out.
- Online randomiser, named lolly sticks. develop set criteria. End of week compliment slips. What did you like?
- What advice do you have for your partner?
- only give 30sec to discuss. What did you and your partner discuss? Do not fix the pairings. Promote no hands-up.
2. Student to teacher feedback
- learning happens during the lesson. Give them time to influence what they are doing.
- No competitive rewards or ability groupings. Normalises errors.
- start with a 5 minute prior knowledge discussion. Share current understanding. What have they remembered? Students discuss for 3 minutes while teacher listens.
- check the understanding of the lesson. What could I have done better? What did I do that helps you understand?
- overloading the working memory. 3 or 4 steps at a time. What is the off-task behaviors telling me?
3. Mid Lesson learning feedback
- healthy learning culture with his self-efficacy. Students learn to compare their work with others. See similarities and areas for improvement.
- use exemplars. what are the successes? Improvement suggestions. Use talking pairs
- use different coloured pens
- make sure kids are focused on the success criteria, let them know you will be randomising the piece of work.

- Author to choose what they are going to change in their writing.
